Abnormal fluid pressures caused by deposition and erosion of sedimentary basins

چکیده
Gravitational loading or unloading due to deposition or erosion in sedimentary basins is one of the most common mechanisms responsible for abnormal fluid pressures in geologic formations. This paper examines the integrated response of fluid pressures to both deposition and erosion using vertical one-dimensional numerical models. The modeling results show that vertical loading and unloading of sedimentary basins containing thick interbeds of low permeability can give rise to abnormal fluid pressure-depth trends that closely resemble those observed in the field. On a geological time scale, an under-pressured formation may become normally pressured or over-pressured and vice versa because of transient flow induced by vertical geologic movements. A case study in the Guymon area of Texas County, Oklahoma, shows that there are two underpressured reservoirs in this area. The burial curve constructed from geologic information indicates that this area has undergone multiple subsidence and uplift events. Based on stratigraphic information, a vertical geologic section of this area is represented by a numerical model consisting of two reservoir formations and two shale (confining) units. The numerical model is able to reproduce the observed pressure abnormalities based on the drill-stem test (DST) data. The hydraulic conductivities of the two shale formations are estimated to be 4.2 × 10 and 5.1 × 10 m s from model calibration. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

The Filling Dynamics of an Estuary: From the Process to the Modelling
Estuaries are submitted to a natural filling caused by the settling of cohesive sediments ( < 63 μm). Those sediments, coming mostly from the sea, are transported in estuaries by the tidal currents during ebb and flood flows. During slack water, fluid velocities vanish and particles are no more suspended by turbulent dispersion. Sediment particles settle towards the bottom, and then deposit on...
متن کاملWind waves in shallow microtidal basins and the dynamic equilibrium of tidal flats
[1] Shallow microtidal basins are characterized by extensive areas of tidal flats that lie within specific ranges of elevation. These landforms are inherently flat and their evolution strongly depends on the balance between sedimentary and erosive processes. Here we present a stochastic point model for tidal flat evolution to study the influence of tidal currents and wind waves on tidal flat eq...
متن کاملSedimentation and Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks are one component of the modern threefold classification of rocks. They derive from the lithification of sediments, which are produced in basically two ways: by the mechanical deposition of grains derived from the alteration of other rocks (detrital or clastic rocks), or as chemical precipitates or grains formed organically or inorganically from an aqueous solution. The whole ...
متن کاملComparing WEPP and Hydro Physical Models to Estimate Soil Erosion and Sediment Production: A Case Study of Chardavol Watershed
Extended abstract 1- Introduction Soil erosion and sediment production include fundamental limitations in the use of soil and water resources. The sediment yields watersheds in addition to the loss of soil fertility, causing water quality reduction. Therefore, evaluation processes that govern their behavior to better understand and assess the systems of watershed management practices are imp...
متن کاملSimulating the development of Martian highland landscapes through the interaction of impact cratering, fluvial erosion, and variable hydrologic forcing
On the highlands of Mars early in the history of the planet precipitation-driven fluvial erosion competed with ongoing impact cratering. This disruption, and the multiple enclosed basins produced by impacts, is partially responsible for a long debate concerning the processes and effectiveness of fluvial erosion. The role of fluvial erosion in sculpting the early Martian landscape is explored he...
